The novel I believe it's about a young teenager battling with the licor to which he called Hard love. Every step of the way, she/he is remembering her teenage years and they way her/his parents fight to keep her out of trouble. Now a grown up she/he isn't able to call home full of shame for what he just become. Also I believe the all the actions (remebering her/his teenage years) passed in front of the phone boot debating between calling home or not.
It is a strong song. What I get from the song makes me believe that the novel is about a teenager that was giving a hard time to his/her parents. He/she has grown up and gets to understand that his/her parents always meant well for him/her. But as a usual teenager that believes that knows everything didn't realized it up to now. He/she is so ashamed that can't even get to call his/her parents just to tell them that he/she is sorry and that he/she loves them.
